I am so proud of Matthew and all the work that has gone into his Eagle project. He worked really hard to accomplish this....now we just gotta have him finish all the paperwork so he can go for his Eagle board of review.
He had a great turn out at the Udall's home/work area to build the frames for the sensory tables. It was fun to watch how long it took to build one. But it probably took the same amount of time o build the next 19 as it did for the first one.
The boys loved the tools they got to use to build them. They were all great and even cleaned up the space when they were finished. They only had one mishap of an entire bottle of glue being dumped over the table. But, it could have been worse and they were able to clean it up.
I liked watching him work with these great guys and bringing together so many young men. Knowing they all wanted to be ther to help him was such a great thing as a mom.
Before he actually got to this part of things, he had to get the money to accomplish this. He had the kids help make calls to family and such. He had ward members and friends donate the toys and much of the filler. In the end, as parents we still had to buy 550 additional pounds of rice. Yeah, the looks we got at costco on that one, and a bunch of additional toys to fill the tables. But its not something we mind doing to help our son with his project.
Then we took over our entire downstairs filling the trays with toys and then filling it in with beans, wheat, rice, and noodles.
The day finally arrived for the Downs Syndrom Awareness Fair which is where he presented the tables. He was able to get the help from a great guy and his son to deliver all this to the park. I'm glad I didn't have to try to deliver it in our little car.
He and several families were there to set up the tables for the kids to play with through out the event. He had families help him reburry the toys when the kids walked away. He had people explain about the tables and just help the families there enjoy them.
Ellie and her friend are helping to burry the toys....or looking for them so they could reburry them :)
He had to use the mike throughout the night to announce the winners of the drawing. He had all 20 given away and loaded into different families cars so they could all keep being used for their purpose long after the event was over.
Here is a picture of the tables set up as the event got started. As the night went on they got used plenty.
This is what it would look like when a kid would walk away. It got hard to keep the toys burried for the next kids that would come. It was great to see families make them work for their kids of different ages.
I loved watching the kids thank Matthew for all he did for these. They all were so excited when they realized they got the whole bin toys and all! He was the coolest scout ever that day!
Thank you Matthew for being such a great kid to do your eagle project on something that would impact so many special lives! Thanks to all those who supported him throughout the project with time/supplies/money. He couldn't have done it without great support.
