Then you add mom getting everyone ready to make sure teeth are brushed, faces washed and all stays clean and nice with hair fixed. This is followed by much grumbling by all about how much fun pictures are not! Mom agrees and says she doesn't care, she wants the picture so pretend for 20 minutes that all we ask!

Then you find a nice photographer that you can afford. That can be really tricky but you do what you have to. For this event mom and brother in law had to play both photographer and person in the picture. That is the tricky part. Next time I'm hiring someone just to get the big shot and everyone will be happy as it can go so much faster, but we live and we learn.

The photographer then has to find a nice place to take the picture. Get the lighting as close to good as they can, and set up the camera and tripod.

You can't forget that no one knows where to stand. Who looks good where, gotta make sure everyone is visible but also that the lines of the picture look right. This is much easier with small groups not under pressure of how much everyone doesn't want to be there.

Once the big picture is done then all the fun "break downs" happen. Mom and dad together, mom with kids, just kids, all those sorts that make the "wall of photos" come together.

Then when its all done and you send everyone away to get dirty you spend many hours editing the photos. Take the red hot flush out of mom's face, put that hair in place that mom missed in the chaos, adjust the lighting to make up for the lighting not being perfect at the time of the shoot and in the end....

A great family photo that you aren't ashamed to hang on your wall and show to your friends. So for all the grumbling and hassle, it's these pictures we look back on and are so grateful to have...at least I know I am!
